LES REGARDS DU GRAND PARIS – GROUP SHOW

The result of a collaboration between the Ateliers Médicis, the National Center for Plastic Arts (Cnap), the Magasins Généraux, the Société du Grand Paris and the Musée Carnavalet – Histoire de Paris, the exhibition « Regards du Grand Paris » brings together the works of the 38 artists who participated in the first five years (2016 to 2021) of the national photographic commission of the same name, designated by the Ministry of Culture at the Ateliers Médicis in partnership with the Cnap. The exhibition unveils these works for the first time to the public and also intends to return to the territories that saw the birth of these images.

Julien Guinand traite le Grand Paris comme un espace topographique hétéroclyte qui laisse surgir l’existence du sensible dans la ville. Comment la cité, comme espace normatif, s’accommode-t-elle de la géographie, de la végétation, de l’insoumis ? Comment s’y intègrent les contraintes économiques, pratiques, politiques de la population ? La restitution du projet prend la forme de tirages noir et blanc et couleur, complété par des histoires et des sons enregistrés au cours du processus de recherche.

Distants de près de cinq cents kilomètres, les deux massifs montagneux de Kumano et d’Ashio, au Japon, ont en commun d’avoir été lourdement altérés par les activités humaines, depuis les débuts de l’industrialisation. La pollution et la monoculture ont eu des effets dévastateurs dans un pays exposé aux catastrophes naturelles (séismes, typhons) causant éboulements et inondations. Quand il est arrivé au Japon, attiré surtout par la culture du zen, Julien Guinand n’avait qu’une vague idée de cette réalité historique. Il a conduit son propos en s’intéressant d’abord aux effets les plus visibles, pour accéder peu à peu aux processus sous-jacents.
Après un livre, paru en 2021, ce travail prend aujourd’hui la forme d’une exposition. Les photographies sont les pièces maîtresses d’une construction issue du travail d’enquête mené au cours de trois séjours, dans lequel la collecte d’informations et de documents a constamment relayé, relancé, éclairé les prises de vue.
Dans l’exposition, le silence des moulages de Rachel Poignant traverse le récit de Julien Guinand. À la (dé)raison productiviste, ils opposent le travail exploratoire du matériau, sans projet préconçu. Suscitée d’abord par un jeu d’analogies, cette rencontre nous rappelle que, dans le paysage ou dans l’atelier, toute forme est issue d’un processus de formation. Elle rend plus aiguë la question des relations entre échelle géographique et activité individuelle, entre projections collectives et agencements proches.

In the mountains of Kumano and Ashio, in Japan, human activity in the form of intensive forestry and mining operations set in train a series of deadly processes across the region, leading to a blind pursuit of technology at all costs, local responses that included resistance by local residents, and a new awareness of environmental issues. Two Mountains recounts this rich, fragmentary dual story through the photographs, texts and historical documents brought back by Julien Guinand from trips he made between 2015 and 2018. These are supplemented by a discussion between Jean-François Chevrier, Hidetaka Ishida and Jean-Christophe Valmalette.

本展に写真家ジュリアン・ギナン、小野規ら二人のユニットによる、“Vibrant Planet”というテーマに沿った作品をご紹介します。二人はともに人間が自然風景をどうデザインし、自然災害に立ち向かうため、また発生した災害に対処するため、人間が自然風景をどう変化させてきたかに焦点を当てながら、屋外の美について疑問を投げかけます。京都のヴィラ九条山に滞在していた2017年、二人はこのテーマに取り組み、日本の自然あふれる場所や、時に最も神聖とされる場所において、人間がいかなる形や色、精神性により自然に介入しているのかを表現しています。
彼らの作品はいずれも、自然と人工物の対立や、人間活動による風景や自然への影響について、考えをめぐらせるきっかけとなるでしょう。
This year, photographer duo Julien Guinand & Tadashi Ono display their works in conjunction with the theme “Vibrant Planet”. Both artists question the aesthetic of outdoor spaces, focusing on how human beings have designed natural landscapes and changed them to face natural disasters or respond to them after they have happened. While in residence at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto in 2017, Guinand & Ono started to explore this subject, which led them to reveal the shapes, colors and spirit of those human interventions that can occur in the wildest, and sometimes most sacred places in Japan. Their works are inceptions to reflect on the confrontation between nature and the artificial as well as on the impact of human activities on landscapes and nature.

At Villa Kujoyama,Tadashi Ono and Julien Guinand will conduct a research on the Japanese aspect of the design of outdoor spaces, starting from the observation that large development sites of Japanese natural landscapes, in response to recurring natural disasters, give birth to a controlled and reasoned architecture.
小野規とジュリアン・ギナンは外部空間の捉え方に見られる日本特有の側面に関するリサーチを行うことになります。その出発点となるのは、繰り返し発生する自然災害に対応するため行なわれている日本の自然景観の大規模整備事業が、巧みに考え抜かれた建築を生み出しているという事実の確認です。2人はそれぞれ日本のひとつの地方を探訪することになります。小野規が赴く東北は2011年の大地震の被災地であり、文化的な威光はあまり大きくありません。ジュリアン・ギナンが赴く熊野は自然豊かな聖地であり、日本最大級の巡礼路のひとつが横切っています。2人はそれぞれの体験と写真家としての仕事を持ち寄り、突き合せることになります。

Le ministère de la Culture et de la Communication a confié à l’Établissement Public de Coopération Culturelle Médicis-Clichy-Montfermeil et au Centre national des arts plastiques la conduite de la commande photographique « Les Regards du Grand Paris ».
Le Grand Paris est un espace topographique hétéroclite dont Julien Guinand propose de documenter les aspérités. Comment la cité, comme espace normatif, s’accommode-t-elle de la géographie, de la végétation, de l’insoumis ? Comment s’y intègrent les contraintes économiques, pratiques, politiques de la population ? Le projet dévoile les espaces de résistance à l’idéal des plans architecturaux et laisse surgir dans le paysage l’existence sensible de la ville. La restitution du projet se fera sous la forme de tirages noir et blanc et couleur, et au travers des histoires et des sons enregistrés au cours du processus de recherche.
